Hot Home Upgrades To Keep You Toasty Warm

A fireplace or stove adds beautiful ambiance and a functional cozy touch to your home.  Few realize that installing an electric fireplace or stove is essentially the easiest home improvement project you can take on, and outside of the comfort it provides on a cold Winter's day, it also increases the value of your home.  The following will walk you through purchasing and installing electric and wood burning fireplaces and stoves.

Electric Fireplaces

Electric fireplaces conveniently provide the warmth and ambiance of a wood burning fire, but without the mess!  They are far easier to install than gas or wood burning units, and can easily be purchased and mounted or installed the same day.

First you will need to select your fireplace, which boils down to a personal choice of design that suits your home and décor style. Your options are many, ranging from plasma mounts to your traditional mantled style.

You will also need to decide where you will be putting your fireplace.  Being that it requires electricity to run, you will need to put it near an electrical outlet.  Most styles come with a mantle or trim kit that will conceal the outlet once mounted.

Finally, you will need to read the installation instructions that will be included in the fireplace kit you select, to determine how the unit mounts to the wall.  Some use a combination of hooks and screws, while others are freestanding and therefore don't require mounting.

The following are some electric fireplace options you might come across.  These are a few of our top picks:

  • Plasma wall mount – stay warm while enjoying the look of your fire on a plasma screen.
  • Slimline – slim in depth to maximize space in any room.
  • Mini – compact size fits all rooms, big and small.
  • Insert - no mantle.
  • Traditional – grand and established - most often with large mantle.

Electric & Wood Burning Stoves

Electric stoves introduce a rustic ambiance to a room and are generally more suited to cabins or informal areas like the basement of the family home.  Some models are able to work with or without heat so you will have the option to add the glorious ambiance of a wood burning fire in the warmer months, without actually heating your home.

Electric stoves require little or no installation except to move them to where you want them, and plug them in.  Most are fully portable and therefore make a useful heat source for multiple rooms.

Wood burning stoves are more difficult to install because they require a chimney to vent the smoke.  Features you may want to consider when purchasing a log-burning stove are its dimensions, heating capacity, and log capacity.

Whereas electric fireplaces and stoves can give off a fair amount of heat without heating the entire unit to a scalding temperature, wood burning stoves become extremely hot to the touch and can be a burn hazard.
